Final Project

My BIG IDEA for this project was randomness in street art. What I did was I used Photoshop to edit multiple pictures of walls and add my own art to it to somewhat send a message. The first picture I did was a picture of the side of a large building and a live trace image of an orangutan holding the eye of sauron. What I did was took a regular picture of sauron and took it into Adobe Illustrator and used the live trace effect to turn it into a distinguishable black and white picture of sauron. Then what I did was I took a picture of an orangutan holding a big rubber ball and took that into Illustrator as well and turned that into an easily distinguishable picture and merged the two so that it looked like the monkey was holding the eye of sauron watching you. I then found a picture of a large building and put the monkey on the side of the building. I wanted to send a hidden message within my own that you are always being watched but you will never truly know what is actually watching you until you see it. Or you go and try to destroy the ring.

The second picture I did was a picture of Major Glory from the Justice friends. I felt like that would probably be the coolest but one of the most random things I would of ever seen on a wall. The wall that I chose to place the Major on was a wall that on one corner had a one-way street sign and no parking on this side sign. All you can see on the no parking on the side sign is the, this side. A little further to the right in the picture are a small sidewalk block and 5 traffic cones. Above that is what looks like a canopy with the words EXIT cut off at the T so all you can see is the EXI. I decided to put the Major in between the this side sign and the exit canopy. So that it looks as if the major is directing you towards the exit that also looks as if it is under construction and that you can only take this path.

The last image I did was a drawing of two popsicles connected together. The red Popsicle is hungry at the beginning and slowly eats the yellow Popsicle. I placed the drawing on a wall that was in a dark alleyway and had a dark and dreary overcast. The cartoon is varying happy and upbeat looking which I fell will give it a good contrast to the dark background. The message behind it is supposed to be that anything can be bittersweet depending on your point of view. The Popsicle eating his friend, it’s awesome at first because he is eating a giant popsicle but then he notices that he ate his friend. The dark wall and sky are to have the same affect against the colorful cartoon.

In a galaxy far far away

My thought process towards a lot of ideas is a process of sacrifice, friendship, hard decisions, many waisted hours in bed, a lot of spring boarding, and many cans of soda. A lot of my work is impulsively made or is just influenced by an emotional point in something. Sometimes ill get an idea from just having a conversation with my friends. More than often I see something online and want to create the same thing just to go through the process or I want to create my own version of what ever it was that I saw online. I decide what I want to make my piece of art on. It is usually a regular piece of paper. When i want to create something but cant think of what actually to make I text my friend saying "what's the most random thing you can think of?" He usually gets back to me within about 5 minutes. Or I do random think tank kind of thing on Facebook, I usually just put as my status "what is the most random thing you can think of?" If I don't like any of the ideas that my friend or friends (yes I do have "friends") gave me I usually unconsciously spring board off of their ideas and create my own. If I really like their idea I usually talk to them about it and make it but give them credit. So my big idea of randomness is brought up on my own, with wanting to create something. I believe that the best ideas are the ones that are pulled out of thin air. Another lit sub part of it will be the fact that it must be street art. I love the idea of street art cause everyone in a way HAS to look at it. If it's on the ground they have to see it if they're looking where they are walking and if it is on a wall then they'll see it just by looking around. Some of the rules im gonna set for myself are that I can only use ideas given to me from a friend or something I came up with by spring boarding off of one of their ideas. The materials I might use are paints, paper, photoshop, actually almost anything to go along with the randomness of the art.

Micro Project 5

The two words I was assigned were drop and suspend. What I did was I created a video of me going through my everyday routine and dropping everything that I pick up from a pencil to the bottle of shampoo in the shower. Dropping everything was used to create the feeling that I can't hold anything, that was to show the word drop (and yes I do juggle quite often.).
At the same time in the video there are small clips that are placed in the video of me drawing a picture I created to show the word suspended. The picture is of my most used item. My headphones, that I drew piece by piece on individual sticky notes and arranged them on a wall to make a pair of headphones. The sticky notes are supposed to represent how the item is suspended by the sticky notes on the wall. The reason I chose the song "1940" by the Submarines, was because I thought the beat fit very well with the mood of the video. (If the video doesn't work here is a youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4u8d5MS_08 )
I'd like to thank my roommate for helping me tape stuff when I needed to.

micro project 4

The way I came up with this idea was from the requirement info that was assigned to this project. As soon we were given the option of making ourselves look like a cartoon character or super hero I jumped straight towards the classic black hole from old bugs bunny cartoons. I had my friend take a picture of me with an empty can of mountain dew flipped over and had it look like I was pouring it out onto the brick walk way at the oval. What I would change in this picture would be that I would get another picture from underneath my knee to make the second black hole look more realistic. I wish I could of gotten a picture with me holding a black hole and my leg vanishing into it making it look as if im walking into the hole. The big reason I chose to do the cartoon idea was because I've got to go with the classics!

micro project 3

I chose the small plaza in front of the Wexner center that has periodically placed trees in the plaza. I chose it because the wexner center is known for art exhibition and I feel like it is a place to go to if you’re trying to come up with ideas for something, or a piece of art. What I did was I painted a recreation of Michelangelo’s "Creation Of Adam" on the plaza, but I edited over Adams face and put Brutus’s head over his head. I tried to make it look like it was a street art. The plaza and was too big to get a good angle to clearly see the picture. I edited it with Brutus to show how I represent my school and kind of to represent how Adam was supposed to be the perfect person and for the sake of my message he still is. What I was trying to do was have a hidden message that, we are the best and we are the first. I also tried to send the message with the piece that I like the work of Michelangelo and how he made the messages in his artwork very prudent but it is still hidden in its own special way. The reason I made it a painting was because I have always enjoyed graffiti and the fact that you can display your personal work and opinion. I also enjoy that it is almost an immortal piece of your work that is placed in the public domain. I also enjoy the feeling of fear and rush generally associated with graffiti. The thought of letting everyone see your work and your thought on a certain object or issue for the public to share their opinion and worrying how long it will still be there before someone paints over it or decides to add their own tag.

Micro project 1

This map is a map of my morning walk to Art Education 252. I start off by waking up usually at 8:15 am (as the red line portrays), shower, eat breakfast, and head on my way to class. That starts by walking from my apartment down 12th avenue, all the way down to High street and I take a right down south High street at the OSU Union building. I keep walking down south High street until I get to the Wexner center where I make a left turn and head straight down west 17th avenue until I see the RPAC on my left and the OSU football stadium straight ahead. While walking to class I usually think about how im now apart of The Ohio State University and how I am finally a Buckeye and that I am finally in college! That's my morning adventure if I wake up on time. If I wake up late like say 9:15 am (as the grey line portrays). There is no shower or breakfast, I run out of myapartment hoping that I have pants on, sprint down 12th avenue. Run across High street, run through the Union building. Continue running then get to the oval where I run across that hoping not to get hit in the head with a frisbee or football. I run around Mirror lake until I see the RPAC or the stadium, and during all this, March Of The Swivel Heads, by The English Beat is playing in my head.

Golf course 1997

The piece of art was a rather large piece that was covered in trash and fake grass. Everything was layered on top of each other as to give it a feel of depth. There was fake grass near the top of the piece and the head of a putter was cut off and placed above that grass to make it look as if some one was playing golf on top of the grass. Beneath the grass was a bunch of garbage and waist. There was also a dinosaur head beneath the grass that looked like it was hiding in the shadows and eating a human finger. The denotation I thought was how high society has grown to cover up all its bad past and anything they don't want people to know about. The connotation I feel is that society has gotten so high and proud of its self that it wants to cover up all its blunders and that they try to keep everything under ground.

Hi, my name is Sean Malone

I am a Sophomore, and I am majoring in graphic design. I am nineteen and my birthday is june eighth. I have lived in Columbus, Ohio my entire life. I now live in an apartment on campus. Some things about me are that I love art, music, animals, rock climbing, ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, taekwondo, snowboarding, playing guitar and tenor saxophone, and of course OSU. My favorite bands are: Streetlight Manifesto, The Arctic Monkeys, Mustard Plug, Less than jake, Led zeppelin, No Service Project, and a bunch of other obscure bands.

I work at a taekwondo school and the best way to describe my job is simply that I teach kids to beat each other up and defend themselves. I have been doing taekwondo for fourteen years now. I have won a lot of first place trophies in both sparring and the forms competition. Also a lot of spirit awards (it is what you get if you don't place at all) and I am a third degree senior black belt. I also hope to open my own taekwondo school at some point in my life.

In the time being though I hope to be able to find a job designing t shirts and a multitude of other things. My dream job in the industry would be to work for the Hasbro toy company designing packaging boxes, toys, shirts, games, just about anything you can think of. I have already designed t shirts for the taekwondo school I work at and shirts for an autism speaks event. I have worked at the zoombezi bay for two years as a lifeguard as well. I played lacrosse until my junior year in high school, my senior year I started playing ultimate frisbee and still do.

That sums up a good majority about me. I hope to enjoy this class and everyone in it!
